Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Resort & Towers - Dubai, UAE

Asia, Business Trip, Family Vacation, Hotels (Hotels and Resorts) No Comments

Absolutely fantastic hotel with a huge garden of palm trees, a big swimming pool, a very well maintained beach, extremely helpful staff, clean and spacious rooms, perfect food quality.

We stayed in this hotel with my family (my wife and 2 sons - 2 and 7 years). It was a perfect refreshing trip. We stayed during early April 2008. As a general comment for the whole UAE, major construction works are ongoing. There’s a construction site just next to the hotel which may generate some noise during your relaxation. However, the ambience of the hotel is so relaxing that you don’t even mind it.

The quality of the food is perfect. The hotel is somewhat overpriced, as expected from Sheraton brand.

Rooms were comfortable. Housekeeping maintains the room around the clock. They even don’t mind to change towels three times a day. Everything is designed and thought for the comfort.

The resort has the activities through the week - belly dancer, children’s activities, open-buffet dinner, theme dinners, etc.

The hotel offers massages of different types in the middle of the palm tree garden.

The swimming pool may need some water toys; such as slides, etc.

The resort also has a football pitch.

The only problem we had was to find the location because of the construction works. However, here are the directions: Just follow Jumeirah Beach Road, connect it to Sufouh Road. Follow Sufouh Road, no right- or left-turns. When you think that the road has ended, you will see a kind of “hidden” sign that shows “Sheraton Hotel Only”, on a dark brown signboard. To make it clearer, you have to follow the road till Starbucks; and when you see Starbucks, you should continue another 100 meters to see the sign. Other than this problem, you expect no problems. The location of the hotel, if you’d like to look at it on Google Earth: 25° 4′23.73″N 55° 7′44.11″E. The web site is at: http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1326

I just don’t know why they don’t have a picture of their beach on their web site; it is worth putting a picture of it!

This is a strongly suggested hotel for those who has the budget to spend.

Gisborne Bed and Breakfast, Gisborne, North Island, New Zealand

Australia, Hotels (Hotels and Resorts), Leisure No Comments

From an old hospital, this hotel has been converted into a spacious and beautiful B&B that serves absolutely divine breakfast meals. There’s nothing like waking up and taking a stroll to a large, sandy, yellow beach first thing in the morning while the air is fresh and the traffic is low – well if there was any traffic during the day at all of course!

There is a huge variety of activities that can be done in and around Gisborne, from dolphin swimming, hikes, and trips to the old WW2 bunkers. If you would prefer the more calm day trips, there is always golf and wine tasting.

The hotel itself is family run, and they endeavor to do the best they can to keep a wonderful friendly attitude between all the guests and staff. And at $100 NZD a night, there was many left for the pub just around the corner.

Thornton Beach Holiday Park, Bay of Pleanty, North Island, New Zealand

Australia, Leisure, Parks and Recreation Areas No Comments

Thornton Beach itself, is an incredibly beautiful and never-ending beach. And with 120 caravan sites (with power and water), you will be waking up to a variety of new neighbors everyday.  While the town of Thornton is quite small, which is part of the attraction, the holiday park is situated only 14km from Whakatane and 8km from Edgecumbe.

The Wharf has a boat ramp and you can also purchase supplies like tackles and bait from the main office. There is also a child’s play area along with a very good set of amenities (including well kept kitchen, with microwave, fridge and hotplates,) And for those that want a hot snack or don’t wish to cook that night, there is a food caravan each day that serves hot and cold food and drinks. A site will set you back as little as $12 or $15 NZD.

Having lived in Thornton as a child, it was a delight to return to the beach where I grew up and once again do all the activates I did as a child like fishing, eeling in the nearby river, collecting shellfish for the BBQ, and spending all day on the beach.

Cwmwennol Country House, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK

Europe, Leisure, Parks and Recreation Areas No Comments

Pembrokeshire itself is a relaxing beautiful place, so when we were there we decided to go the extra step and stay at lodge instead of a hotel. We were not disappointed, as the rooms were very nice indeed, the food excellent and the hosts are top notch. The price was also nice and cheap, making the lodge great value.

There are some nice woodland areas nearby for a walk, especially if you have a four-legged friend with you. After 15 minutes, you can also find yourself on the beachfront, but you might also be a bit muddy from the walk.

We also met quite a few returning clients for the lodge, which made us believe that this lodge has been a great stay for quite a while know. So make sure you book early as it s liable to be busy during the best times of the year.

Casa Hospedaje “Sol y Luna”, Trujillo, Peru

Family Vacation, Holiday Villages, South America No Comments

This is a lodging house as opposed to a hostel, in “Urbanization” El Recreo. It is only 15 mins to the main bus station and provides a very family friendly environment. Because only a small number of visitors can stay at one time, it feels very exclusive.  But because of these unique benefits, it is also a little more expensive than your typical hotel or hostel. Highly recommended for families, or those that want a relaxing, safe location away from the centre of the city.

The staff supply a truly complete service, from cleaning to cooking, yet at the same time the kitchen and laundry is available for those that wish to save a little money. The town centre is about 20 mins, costing an amazingly cheap 2 Soles (60c USD) or go by the insane “combis” and spend only .5 Sol (15c!!!). In the town you will find restaurants, shops for clothing, souvenirs and travel agencies offering great tours of the local archeological areas or the nearby beaches.

Cosmopolitan Hotel, Melbourne, Australia

Australia, Hotels (Hotels and Resorts), Leisure No Comments

Located conveniently very near the trendy bars and clubs, only 1 block, it’s a great place to stay in St Kilda. But because of this, it is quite a noisy location. It is best suited for those that want to spend the day sleeping in the sun, and the nights living the nightlife. It’s also only 3 blocks from the nice white sandy beach.

Rooms were nice and big and also clean. There is also a plasma TV, internet connection, good work area for business travelers, and the bed is very comfortable. And at $130 for the room, it was a good summer price at a time that a lot of hotels raise their prices. I also found the staff very friendly and helpful. If you manage to drag yourself away from the beach, there are many things to due in Melbourne’s St Kilda area. And make sure you try the tram, as it’s a delightful trip.

City Lodge, Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Africa, Cities, Hotels (Hotels and Resorts), Leisure, Seaport No Comments

The first thing you might think as you see City Lodge is “who in the their right mind would stay in a pink building?” but once you get past the awful paintjob the lodge is very nice. With big bedrooms, very modern and clean, and with a fantastic bed.

When I visited, I managed to arrive just at the right time to go whale watching on a boat. Something that before, I thought was rather lame, but now I recommend to everyone.

The hotel also has a pool, if you don’t want to head off to the beach. But to be honest, there  much better beaches in other parts of South Africa. Also, if you look around a little you can found little gems like the Billabong factory outlet for some good cheap clothes. Since Port Elizabeth is at one end of the Garden Route, it’s a place a lot of people forget as they head to Cape Town or north for a safari. But in a quiet town, this is a quaint well priced lodge.

Cape Heritage Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa

Africa, Hotels (Hotels and Resorts), Leisure No Comments

A fantastic hotel with exceptional staff that make you feel like you have arrived in a higher class hotel than you paid for. It’s always a good sign when the owner of the Hotel greets the new arrivals and you get to know some of the staff on a first name basis.

The hotel is within walking distance of some good markets and hidden away from the main touristy harbour area. The rooms are top quality and breakfasts are brilliant. Any queries we had, one of the staff were always happy to stop and help out. They even gave some great tips on the best places for cheap quality tour tickets. The hotel also felt very secure, which unfortunately at times, is a major factor in some of the areas in Cape Town.

Cape Town is a beautiful, outstanding city, with many fantastic locations that any visitor needs to see. The Cape point, Table Mountain, and Robin Island are just to name a few.

Karyatides Hotel, Aegina, Greece

Europe, Hotels (Hotels and Resorts), Leisure No Comments

A nice family owned hotel in Agia Marina on the island of Aegia, a few of us stayed at this hotel in 2001 during our trip to Greece. Brilliant morning views and wonderful hospitality, the Karyatides is a great place to stay. Listed as only a 2-star hotel, the homemade breakfasts are delicious and the rooms as typical of the island, but still very adequate. The price was (as it was before the euro) equivalent to 25 Euros a night. The main office will also organize tourist activities for the interested traveler, and many of which can create the experience of your trip. Eating your own captured octopus or going for a swim of the back of a boat in the blue waters around the islands, there is plenty of activities for everyone to do. If you take the ferry to Athens on the Despina, it is a hour’s ride, but straight from Aegina Marina. Otherwise you can go to Aegina Town and take the Flying Dolphins HydroFoil, which is 20 minutes to Aegina Town and 40 minutes to Athens from there.
