Alojamiento Las Playas, Copacabana, Bolivia

South America, Tips and Tricks No Comments

Copacabana is a nice quiet gateway to the west of Bolivia. Cleaner and quieter than La Paz with a lot of opportunity for water activities and hiking. The trip to the Isla del Sol is the main attraction, but remember the boats only leave in the early morning as it is a 3-hour trip to the island. The Hostel that we stayed at was your basic amenities hostel. One double bedroom, one bathroom with hot water (a rare bonus), but the owners were very helpful with any information we asked about. They also came and woke us up when we almost overslept and missed our bus to La Paz! The cost was 20 Bolivianos a night. And because of the small size of Copacabana, everything is within walking distance of the hostel. But make sure you already have some Bolivianos as the exchange rate in Copacabana is not favourable, and many things are to cheap to be paid in US$. If you have seen the ruins of Machu Pichu, the ruins on the island will seem less impressive but on a nice day it is a wonderful hike. But beware, the sun is very strong at that altitude! Make sure you have a good strong sun blocker.  Most hostels have restricted times for water (normally restricted in the early afternoon) so make sure that use the facilities in the evening or the morning. Useful to remember after a long hike across the Isla del Sol in the afternoon!
